Environment scholarship available for post-secondary students

Applications are being accepted until May 31, 2009 for the S.C. Johnson Environmental Scholarship. This scholarship, worth $1,500, is made available by the Grand River Conservation Foundation to help university students continue their studies in conservation and environment related fields.

Applications are open to full-time students who have completed the third year or sixth semester of an honours program at a watershed university (Waterloo, Guelph, Laurier) or college (Conestoga). Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, in one of the following programs: environmental sciences, engineering, chemistry or manufacturing.

The application deadline is May 31 and a selection will be made by the foundation’s awards committee prior to Aug. 31. Liaison Officers


Six temporary full-time positions from August 4, 2009 to November 27, 2009

Admission Services, Office of Registrarial Services

Reporting to the Assistant Registrar - Student Recruitment, Liaison
Officers will be required to give presentations at approximately one
hundred Ontario high schools as part of the individual school visit
program, presenting information to prospective students, parents,
teachers and secondary school officials. The Liaison Officers will be
responsible for preparing reports on those visits; participating at the
Ontario Universities’ Fair; counselling prospective applicants;
responding to inquiries; assisting with on-campus events; assisting with
the production of liaison materials and information; general
correspondence; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements of this position include: a University degree (preferably
from the University of Guelph); relevant experience in the liaison,
registrarial or student services environment, public relations or
marketing or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication and
interpersonal skills; knowledge of word processing. A valid Ontario
driver’s licence is essential. Must be able to work weekends and
evenings. Extensive travel throughout Ontario is required.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Join a salmon research team in the Broughton Archipelago!

- Volunteer opportunities, April - June 2009 (minimum of 2 weeks)

This study, started in 2003, follows the outmigration of
young chum and pink salmon fry as they wind their way
through the inlets towards the sea. The goal of the project
is to monitor the levels of parasitic sea lice on the juvenile
salmon as the approach and pass salmon farms. Numerous
studies have been published from this work in an effort to
understand the threat of sea lice to local salmon populations.

We are seeking volunteers to join the sampling team. The
volunteer would assist researchers on board a 18' open boat
as we make day trips from Echo Bay out into the Broughton
Archipelago to live-sample juvenile wild pink and chum
salmon at points along their migration corridors. The work
requires an ability to persevere in challenging remote field
conditions and the ability to join in on the physical work
of beach seining and running the research station. Previous
experience conducting ecological fieldwork, especially on
fish and in marine settings is an asset. It is an ideal
setting for someone looking to start graduate work.

There is a minimum of a 2-week commitment for volunteers.
Volunteers would have food and accommodation covered, and
would be living with the researchers at the Salmon Coast
Field Station in Echo Bay. Transportation to and from the
research station to Port McNeill will be arranged for the
beginning and end of the volunteer period, but volunteers to
cover their transportation costs to the dock in Port McNeill
- http://www.salmoncoast.org . The Salmon Coast Field
Station is situated in a very remote setting. There are no
stores, roads, ferries and we are out of cell range.

Requirements:

- ability to work outdoors all day on the water in all weather
- must be able to swim well and be comfortable on small boats
- physical fitness - there is a lot of jumping around on shore
and pulling nets and buckets
- assist with basic station chores such as cooking,
cleaning, chopping firewood & gardening.
